The name Tumwater
originated from an Indian word, “tum-chuck,” meaning
noisy water. The powerful, “noisy” water can be
found at the lower falls of the DesChutes River, the site
of the first Tumwater settlement. Centrally located on Interstate-5,
Tumwater is a perfect launching point to visit the Puget Sound,
Mt. Rainier, Mt. St. Helens, the Pacific Ocean beaches, and
the Olympic Peninsula and rain forest. The city itself is
a bustling center of activity. It boasts 10 parks and playgrounds,
a golfing range and municipal golf course, an athletic club,
and a new 14,000-square foot library. The Old Town Center
is a full-service community resource center offering a wide
range for free and low-cost recreational programs. Major employing
