The name Tumwater
originated from an Indian word, “tum-chuck,” meaning
noisy water. The powerful, “noisy” water can be

of the first Tumwater settlement. Centrally located on Interstate-5,
Tumwater is a perfect launching point to visit the Puget Sound,
Mt. Rainier, Mt. St. Helens, the Pacific Ocean beaches, and
the Olympic Peninsula and rain forest. The city itself is

and a new 14,000-square foot library. The Old Town Center
